Late 12th - early 13th c.
Fragment of a red monochrome square tile, with cut straight edges. Fine fabric, identical to the one identified for the glazed vessels of the Ghazni pottery corpus (Fabric no. 25). The rear surface is uneven and cracked. Moulded relief decoration probably representing a felid in profile, facing the dexter side, only the head with gaping jaws is preserved. The central motif is enclosed in a beaded frame. The presence of white slip just under the red wash is a unique and very unusual feature. It could be connected with the fact that the potter changed his mind during the manufacturing process and chose another colour for the tile. Indeed, no other red monochrome tile of the Ghazni corpus shows white slip associated with a red coating, while white slip is commonly used for yellow, green, and brown monochrome tiles.
