Moulded relief decorated tile
Fired clay

13x0.9 cm
Late 12th - early 13th c.

Complete large red-orange monochrome square tile, with uneven edges. Fine fabric, very similar to the one identified for the glazed vessels of the Ghazni pottery corpus (Fabric no. 25, but with more small inclusions). The slip unevenly covers the front surface, leaving many portions unslipped, as a result they appear yellowish. Two pieces of other earthenware objects (spacers?) remained stuck to the front surface of the tile, probably during the firing process. The rear surface is quite even and smooth. Moulded relief decoration representing a zoomachia, with a felid (possibly a lion or a dog) attacking a caprid or a hare. The felid seems winged, with two long thin wings on its back. Above the main scene, there is a little bird flying, and two trefoil leaves, one represented upside down. The central motif is unframed.
