Late 12th - early 13th c.

Fragment of a mustard monochrome square tile, with cut straight edges. The tile is slightly warped, appearing curved in section. The front surface is cracked. It was probably badly fired. Medium-fine fabric, similar to the one identified for the glazed vessels of the Ghazni pottery corpus (Fabric no. 25, but little coarser and with a lighter colour). The front surface is cracked under the glaze. The slip unevenly covers the front surface, leaving all the portions in relief of the decoration and the frame unslipped, as a result they appear darker. A calcareous deposit covers the front surface. The rear surface is quite even and smooth, but partially cracked. Moulded relief decoration representing a rampant lion in profile, facing the dexter side, with its left forefoot in the air. The animal is rendered with gaping jaws and a vegetal scroll coming out from its mouth, and shows a large tail raised with a vegetal end. The central motif is enclosed in a beaded frame.
